About myself:

What can I say about myself? I feel like saying, “Look at the pictures, they speak louder than words.” But if you want to know more, read on.

Sculptures
When I look back on certain periods of my life, I notice that my sculptures and drawings always expressed exactly whatever was going on in my life at the time. Maybe that is why design, sculpting and painting are so fascinating to me. Subconsciously, you create yourself.

Commissions
Working on commission is perhaps the most exciting aspect of my life as an artist. It prevents the Ivory Tower mentality that some artists have; it keeps your mind keen and alert. You can follow many interests. You have to interact with many different people; they dare you to check your art against reality. You find out that there are so many different realities, all with their own separate applications, customs, atmosphere. It is enriching to be exposed to these realities and to let yourself be influenced by them.

Flowers
Flowers and flower shapes have been a recurring motif in my drawings and sculptures for a long time. This is not a conscious choice; they just appear. Even from a strong abstract symmetry flowers seem to come into being. The transformation from closed bud to open flower seems wonderful and mysterious to me. I designed the tulip sculpture in Avehorn right after the birth of my son. This sculpture expresses all of my joy and amazement experiencing the miracle of new life.

Contented
I am contented with an artwork if, in my inimitably individual way, it manages to convey the realities of the people concerned. I feel truly contented if a sculpture of mine brings joy to anyone who sees it on a daily basis. I don’t want to sound self-congratulatory, but more often than not, I think this is the case.

Art
For many years I was an active member of commissions and executive committees within the art sector. But there came a time when I wanted to do something else. Even participating in exhibitions didn’t thrill me in the way it used to. In the past few years, I have focused more and more on the application of visual arts outside of the familiar art and exposition circuit.

Right now, for example, I am helping with an action to make voting facilities more accessible to handicapped people. I find it more challenging and useful to apply my skills as a visual artist to a project like this, rather than participate in another exposition that lasts only a few weeks. Participation in the design and establishment of new city neighborhoods is of great interest to me as well.

What do I do?

• Team member and webmaster of www.makkersunlimited.nl, an organization which helps people with a handicap to be more autonomous and have more of a voice in society
• Freelance advisor to urban development planning, especially regarding artistic matters

Werkervaring:

1981-1982
Aktiviteit: Werkzaam als coördinator en administrator voor Stichting de Plataan te Delft, een macrobiotisch collectief dat een eethuis en winkel exploiteerde. Binnen deze stichting waren nogal wat tegengestelde belangen tussen het eethuis en de winkel.
Ervaring: Conflicthantering, onderhandelen en motiveren medewerkers, klantgericht en stressbestendig werken, budgetbewaking.

1983-1984
Aktiviteit: Werkzaam als kok voor Stichting Onderwijs W.C.I.. Deze stichting exploiteert meerdere meditatie-conferentie oorden in binnen- en buitenland. Voor groepen van 30 tot 2000 mensen heb ik in Nederland, Belgie en Frankrijk gekookt.
Ervaring: In samenwerking onder tijdsdruk een hoogwaardig kreatief produkt leveren.
Overleg en onderhandelen in diverse talen met cursusleiders over verschillende dieetwensen; met afdelingshoofden Inkoop, Groentetuinplanning en Technische
Dienst over budget en jaarplanning.
